Angle Brace

When builders join joists, framed walls, or other structural elements perpendicularly, they use angle braces to keep these pieces together. Angle braces are particularly effective when combined with diagonal ties and other reinforcements.

What Are Angle Braces?

An angle brace, also known as an angle bracket, is a metal connector that keeps two parts from separating. Generally, these parts meet at a 90-degree angle, but if construction crews are securing rafters to headers or studs, they may use an obtuse angle brace. Braces vary in size depending on the wooden parts that they’re connecting.

How Are They Used?

Angle braces are common in every step of building a house, office, or shed. They can support walls that are not load-bearing, or they can prevent a wall from shifting apart from the floor during an earthquake or flood. Usually, they’re secured to the parts they connect with nails through predrilled holes.

Angle braces are also helpful during renovations. For example, many old buildings use hoop irons to support their walls and headers, but these parts deteriorate over time, so adding angle braces gives their walls needed reinforcement.

Using high-quality angle braces correctly is key for building strong, durable projects.
